Domestic 4: The Modern House & Housing

Front cover for Designation Listing Selection Guide: Domestic 4: The Modern House & HousingA guide to outline the selection criteria used when designating modern houses & housing.

The development of houses and housing from the late Victorian period onwards is sufficiently complex to warrant a separate selection guide. Domestic buildings constitute the largest single category of designated structures, so greater detail is required in this area. This selection guide concentrates on the twentieth century, but looks back to the later nineteenth century in some regards. For earlier periods, see the other Domestic Buildings selection guides.

This is one of a series of guides which set out some of our approaches to designating buildings. Covering twenty broad categories of building types, they including historical overviews and special considerations for listing, plus select bibliographies. They are primarily intended to develop understanding of designated buildings and structures, and to offer insight into designation decision making.
