drone1The Minister for Sport, Tourism & Heritage Minister, David Evennett MP, met with Neil Spiller and Simon Withers to find out about the 3D project in the historic Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College.

Simon has carried out 3D modelling of the building with a Faro 3D laser scanner. He told the Minister how he has captured the building’s exact size, shape and features so that it can be viewed digitally on phones, tablets and computers, in order to attract more visitors.

Simon’s work ties in with the Painted Hall Conservation Project, a £7 million scheme which aims not only to restore its famous artworks, but also to bring the history of the place to life in creative ways, and to involve a new generation in the process of conservation.

Visiting lecturer / aerial surveyor / landscape architect Peter Wilder demonstrated the Inspire 1 drone in the Stockwell Street crit pit; showing how it is able to provide stable indoor flight using its optical flow sensors.

The flight time of the Inspire 1 is dictated by its battery life of 20 minutes with larger surveys packaged into chunks of that time. It can stream live video back to the base station at 4K resolution.

Other interesting applications of drone technology include firefighting – with thermal imaging showing the hottest part of the fire so this location can be transmitted to “smart” fire engines, and crop dusting with the drone indicating any gaps in coverage of the insecticide, fungicide etc.

The exhibition presents the work of Year 1 students from the Department of Architecture and Landscape, University of Greenwich. It was conceived in collaboration with the local historian Mary Mills and represents the first step in an ongoing project focused on the little known, and often industrial, heritage of Greenwich. The aim is to bring important spaces, buildings and histories to the attention of the general public, while also enabling the students to forge deeper connections with the area the University is situated in.
