Nottingham Contemporary Art Gallery

This autumn we present four solo exhibitions, each featuring new commissions. The four artists use performance, theatre and film. For them, fiction and alternative realities become ways of transforming and extending our understanding of identity, social norms and world history. The idea for the season developed out of conversations with Collabor-8 Collective, Nottingham Contemporary’s young people’s group, and was curated to coincide with Circuit, our arts festival for 15 to 25 years olds in November. Sun Ra (1914-1993): The Cosmo Man This is the…

Architecture in London

Cloud-piercing towers of glass. Stone cathedrals and churches. Slabs of brutalist concrete. Taking a walk through London is like immersing yourself in a history of architecture. Our list of the city’s 50 best buildings celebrates this unique mix. We asked a group of experts to tell us about the London architecture that amazes them. The results capture the essence of the real London in a way that a guidebook’s ‘best bits’ never could. In fact, our top 50 is filled with under-the-radar stuff: pubs, tube stations, council estates. Perhaps this is because…

Architects in Nottingham

London practice Caruso St John Architects have completed an art centre in Nottingham, UK. Called Nottingham Contemporary, the project is inspired by artists spaces in down-town New York during the 1960s. Located in the Lace Market area of the city, the design aimed to recreate the feeling of found spaces in a new building. The facade is clad in lace-patterned, pre-cast concrete, inspired by the regular and repeated surfaces of the surrounding warehouses. Two blocks on the roof are covered in fluted gold anodised aluminium. The centre opened to…

Interior Designers Nottingham

When I am dropped outside Timothy Rundle’s home, I am sure I have made a mistake. The senior fashion lecturer at Nottingham Trent University is known for his refined taste, his Swedish-meets-Italian style. This house is a 1960s red-brick bungalow on a suburban street, with bits of concrete littering the pathway. Contender for Architectural Digest it is not. Well, not until one goes through the front door, into the airy, light, open-plan space that feels more like a sleek than a Nottingham semi. Hardwood floors gleam as sunlight streams through glass…

Art and Architecture definition

Art can truly be judged by you, the individual, as far as you yourself are concerned, by only one measure. It is not a static but an energy measure. Do not ask what the art is or ought to be, for this is debatable and will inevitably lead to endless argument. Ask only what is does – not what it does to somebody else, for this again is only hearsay, but what it does to you. No matter how good a painting may be by any and all theoretical esthetic standards, if it does not do something special to you, Mr. John Doe, then it means about as much to you…
