Classicism Architecture
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The ICAA Summer Studio in Classical Architecture is a four-week, immersive program introducing students to skills, knowledge and resources essential to the practice and appreciation of classical design. Students build a foundation in classical architectural design and composition, the elements of the classical language, proportion, the
literature of classical design, drawing & rendering, and traditional materials.
COURSE OF STUDY
Design Studio
The Studio is the centerpiece of the program within which students are introduced to a conceptual, systematic and historically informed approach to the perennial challenges of building design. Students are guided through the classical design process, introduced to the study of precedent and architectural character, and learn how to apply the classical language in the design of a new building.
Field Study
Studio instruction is complemented by extensive analytical and observational drawing to help make the connection between concepts, principles and theory to the design of actual buildings.
New York City is the Summer Studio laboratory. Participants study exemplary achievements in architectural, urban and landscape design and visit important collections within New York City’s cultural institutions.
Office and Studio Visits
Participants will meet and engage with design professionals working at both the regional and global scale to learn about their design process and the ways in which precedent informs their work.
INSTRUCTION
Program instructors and guest lecturers include leading practitioners in the field of classical design practice and distinguished scholars, bringing a broad range of practical expertise, knowledge and professional experience into the classroom.
