Aberdeen University, Special Collections

Flash Fiction Competition now open!

The Special Collections Centre is home to the University’s historic collections of books, manuscripts, archives and photographs.

Housed in climatically controlled facilities, the collections comprise over 230, 000 rare printed books – including more than 4, 000 16th century items – as well as 5, 000 irreplaceable archival collections, with material dating as far back as the 3rd century BC. The collections cover all aspects of the history and culture of the University, the City of Aberdeen, the region and the relationship they enjoy with the wider world, and are available to be consulted in the Reading Room on the Lower Ground Floor.

The Centre also has a Seminar Room and a Learning Room which provide visitors of all ages with dedicated spaces to learn more about the collections through seminars, workshops and educational activities. The adjacent Glucksman Conservation Centre carries out vital preservation and conservation work on our most fragile items, enabling wider access to these important collections.

The SCC Flash Fiction competition 2016 is now open for entries. Get inspired by four fabulous images from our rare books and archives and send us your 500-word story. Prizes to be won in both children's and adult categories. Closing date Wednesday 26th October 2016. Read more here.
