Oxford College of Emory University Pre-Nursing Prerequisites Guide 2016-2017
Students intending to pursue a pre-nursing course of study leading them to admission to the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing*, Emory University, must complete the coursework listed below during their course of study at Oxford College. These prerequisites include essential courses for pre-nursing preparation as well as courses required to complete the Oxford College General Education Program (GEP).
School of Nursing applicants for Fall 2017 entry and beyond, the following prerequisites will apply:
- BIOL 121 (with lab)
- BIOL 122 (with lab)
- BIOL 141 (with lab) or BIOL 120 (with lab) or BIOL 155 (with lab)
- CHEM 120 (with lab) or CHEM 141 (with lab)
- MATH 117 or MATH 111 or QTM 100
- PSYC 205
- Electives to complete 60-64 hours (not including PE courses)
Prerequisite for BIOL 122 is BIOL 121 (BIOL 141 will no longer be a prerequisite for BIOL 122 as of Fall 2017)
*Students intending to apply to schools other than the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing may need to take Microbiology as a prerequisite course. Specific information about prerequisite courses may be found on the website for individual institutions. Further, Oxford College students needing Microbiology as a prerequisite course for admission to a nursing or allied health program should be advised to take it at another institution (including Emory College).
What about students entering Oxford College with AP credit?
If students are exempted from particular courses due to AP credit according to criteria set by Oxford College, the credits will be counted towards fulfilling pre-nursing requirements. If a student exempts a course required in the pre-nursing curriculum with AP credit, he/she is encouraged to take a college-level course in that particular subject area at Oxford College.
Students must meet the guidelines for admission found on the School of Nursing website: . To graduate from Oxford College students must complete 64 academic credit hours. Academic credit hours do not include Physical Education.
Application Criteria to the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing
Applicants who completed their applications or submitted applications after the posted application deadline(s) will still be reviewed for admission. Admission decisions will be based upon candidate competitiveness as well as space availability. Applicants could potentially be placed on a waitlist. Decisions for waitlisted applicants are announced as seats become available, up to the first day of orientation.
Emory and Oxford students applying to the BSN first degree program will be automatically admitted to the School of Nursing if they meet the following requirements:**
- Submit an online application (only the application - no supporting documents are required) by January 30th of the year they wish to begin the nursing program
- Complete the 60-credit hours of prerequisites at Emory or Oxford College
- Earn a “C” or better in the prerequisite courses - all coursework is subject to review by the Office of Enrollment and Student Affairs
- Obtain a minimum GPA of 3.0 cumulative and 2.8 science/math**
